The new ISO 45001:2018 standard has been published

ISO 45001:2018 – Occupational health and safety management systems – User guide – is the new ISO standard for occupational health and safety (OHS). It has become one of the world’s most anticipated standards and is set to greatly improve safety levels in the workplace.

This standard will replace OHSAS 18001 and organisations certified to OHSAS 18001:2007 will have a three-year migration period to the new standard.

There are several differences between the two standards, but the main change is that ISO 45001 focuses on the interaction between an organisation and its business environment, while OHSAS 18001 focused on managing safety hazards and other internal issues. Occupational health and safety is no longer treated as a ‘stand alone’ subject, but must be seen in the perspective of managing a safe and sustainable organisation. That said, although the two standards differ in their approach, a management system established in accordance with OHSAS 18001 will be a solid platform for migration to ISO 45001.
