Safer food – ISO 22000:2018

The ISO 22000:2005 standard aims at the safety of food chains at a global level; the implementation of its requirements enables the creation of a food safety management system within organisations.

This standard aims to control and prevent risks in the food sector; it can be applied to all companies responsible for producing, packaging, storing, serving and marketing food products.

ISO standards are reviewed periodically to ensure continuous improvement. In July this year, the 22000:2018 standard was launched, in December 2018 it will be accepted by the Romanian Standards Association and the Romanian Society for Quality Assurance as a Romanian standard, and the transition will be completed in March 2021, when the new version will permanently replace the ISO 22000:2005 standard.

What are the improvements of ISO 22000:2018?

  • the latest food safety rules and trends (HACCP) are covered
  • a new approach to the risks of processing steps is introduced
  • the Plan-Do-Check-Act system is described with two separate cycles in the standard that work together: one for the HACCP principles and one for the management system
  • key terms are referred to: preliminary operational programmes (POPP) and preliminary programmes (PPP)
What are the steps for a successful transition?
  • Identify elements of the current management system that no longer meet the requirements of the new version of the standard
  • update the management system documentation
  • training members of the organisation on improvements to the management system
  • conducting an audit to verify compliance of documented processes with the requirements of the new standard
  • obtaining certification to the new version of the standard
